Deutsches Afrikakorps

The panzer divisions and divisional sized units that fought with the DAK at one time or another are listed here. Throughout the desert war they were frequently assigned to newly created corps and army level formations. The Afrikakorps has always been used incorrectly as a generic name for the German troops in N. Africa. That label would only be correct for the early part of the desert war!

The original Afrikakorps was formed on 19th February 1941. On August 15th, Panzergruppe-Afrika was formed and the Afrikakorps was attached under its command along with other German & Italian units. On January 30th 1942, Panzergruppe-Afrika was renamed Panzerarmee-Afrika. In 1943, Panzerarmee-Afrika became the Italian 1st Army and the 5. Panzerarmee was created as well. Both of these units were under the control of Rommel's new Heeresgruppe-Afrika. All units surrendered in Tunisia on 13 May 1943.
